About Hearing Check: Audiogram Test
Hearing Check measures your hearing thresholds at eight frequencies using pure-tone air conduction, on your own headphones, and plots them as a standard audiogram. It takes about five minutes and runs entirely on your device.
WHAT IT DOES
· 250 – 8000 Hz, eight frequencies, each ear measured separately
· The ascending–descending (Hughson–Westlake) procedure, with pulsed pure tones
· A standard audiogram — red circles for the right ear, blue crosses for the left
· Keeps your history so you can see how your hearing changes over time
· Can save results to the Health app, as an audiogram
THREE CHECKS BEFORE THE TEST
· Screening questions: a cold, an ear infection, or loud sound in the last 24 hours all make hearing temporarily worse
· Headphone check: identifies the type of headphones, and verifies that left and right are not swapped
· Room check: measures ambient noise, because a loud room makes your hearing measure worse than it is
These three steps are not decoration. If any of them isn't met, what you measure isn't your hearing.
ABOUT ACCURACY — SAID PLAINLY
This app is not acoustically calibrated, so treat the absolute numbers as rough. What you can trust is the shape of the curve — which frequencies are relatively weaker — and the change between repeated tests, because systematic error cancels out in the difference.
If you can get a trustworthy measured audiogram (Apple's Hearing Test with AirPods Pro, for example), the app can use it to pin down its zero point.
ABOUT PRIVACY
This app never goes online. Its code contains no networking capability at all. No personal information, no device identifiers, no third-party analytics, no advertising SDKs, no account. Your test records stay on this device.
HEARING PROTECTION
Includes safe-listening guidance based on the WHO-ITU H.870 standard: 40 hours a week at 80 dBA, but only about 4 hours at 90 dBA — a few notches on the volume key, and the weekly allowance drops tenfold.
PLEASE NOTE
This app is not a medical device. It cannot diagnose hearing conditions and does not replace an examination by a hearing professional. If you notice sudden hearing loss, ear pain, dizziness, or a change in only one ear, see a doctor — these are things this app cannot detect.
It is intended for people 18 and older. Every health statement in the app links to its source, so you can read the original.
