About Noorderlicht Vandaag - alerts
Northern Lights Today tells you every evening whether the Northern Lights are to be expected, both from the Netherlands and in Lapland. From 17:00 to 01:00, you receive a new update every hour, featuring a radar and livestreams from webcams below the Arctic Circle.
I am a Northern Lights guide in Lapland and have been tracking the solar wind every evening for years. This app is that habit, for anyone who doesn't want to look at the charts themselves.
What you get
- A short analysis every hour: what is happening and whether it is worth going outside
- The chance of Northern Lights from the Netherlands, in plain language
- A Northern Lights radar on the map
- Livestreams from webcams in Lapland, so you can see with your own eyes what the sky is doing there
Honest about the Netherlands
The Northern Lights can be seen from the Netherlands, but rarely. This requires a severe geomagnetic storm, a dark night, and a clear view of the northern horizon. And often you only see it in a photo: your phone sees color where your eyes see a gray glow. So this app simply tells you if it won't work out tonight. That saves you a cold evening on the dike.
Going to Lapland?
Above the Arctic Circle, the Northern Lights can be seen on many clear nights from late August to mid-April. You can watch the sky from Rovaniemi to Kilpisjärvi via the livestreams. It is handy to know in advance what to expect, and to choose which evening to head out on the way.
