- 📦Accelerating Metronome updated to version 1.8This is v1.8 of Accelerating Metronome, and it brings Crafty Cards and the Accelerating Metronome together, a new LOUD Sound Bank, and a long list of refinements to the features you already use.
What's New?
CRAFTY CARDS INTEGRATION
Crafty Cards is a new companion app (coming soon to the App Store): Strategies and suggestions to unseat the hold of habit in our musical practice. Developed over forty years in Guitar Craft and the Guitar Circle by Steve Ball.
Accelerating Metronome can inspire you with HOW FAST to practice by accelerating your progress. Crafty Cards can inspire you with non-linear ideas of WHAT to Practice by offering suggestions designed to unseat your habits and history in the tradition of Oblique Strategies, with a more practical set of suggestions.
If you have both apps on your iPhone, press BEGIN on a card in the CC app, and the Accelerating Metronome opens with that card's words and its card length set up in the Accelerator. Press Back to switch back to the Crafty Cards app when you are done, and the card is marked complete. You can choose the tempo, or a Ramp, in Crafty Cards Settings, so there is nothing to decide in the Metronome. Of course, you can always add Variations (drones, drum loops, polyrhythms, gaps) as you practice the selected Crafty Card.
A NEW LOUD SOUND BANK
Do you play with a band, or through a mixer? LOUD is the Classic bank, but each WAV is nine decibels louder, so the click will cut through loud environments. Your Drum Loops, Pedal Tones and Count In are unchanged. (Thank You Brian Tario for this request.)
DRAW A CUSTOM RAMP
You can now turn on "Draw a Custom Ramp" in Settings and draw the shape of your acceleration or deceleration session with a finger: climb, slow down, add a hump. The line you draw is the Ramp, and you can draw it in Zoom or while it plays. "Draw a Custom Ramp" is OFF by default, so the Accelerator looks and works as before until you turn it on. (Thank You Dave Hill Jr. for this suggestion.)
THE ACCELERATOR REMEMBERS YOUR CATEGORY
The Accelerator opens on the last category you chose. (Thank You Alain Pinero for this request.)
DIAL RESOLUTION: ANY STEP FROM 1 TO 20
Alongside 1, 4 and 8, you can type any step from 1 to 20 BPM into the new box. (Thank You Juan Gabriel Di Lucia, who asked for 7.)
GOLDEN TICKETS + STREAKS
You can store up to ten Golden Tickets now. Past five, the extras fold under one row, so Rewards stays tidy. Practice History and Rewards count your Streak the same way, and a Golden Ticket keeps both alive.
LEADERBOARD WEEKS
Leaderboard weeks run Sunday to Saturday, the same as a Golden Week. And Crafty Cards has its own Global Leaderboard, in the Crafty Cards app.
QUOTES + CARDS
The Quotes and Cards drawer has a Crafty Cards section with the three decks and a Learn More link, and every section has its own glyph.
POLISH and FIXES
You can now set up a 'flat' Ramp that extends any session to a static tempo with a 'static' RAMP playable at any tempo of your choice.
As always, your feedback, feature ideas, bugs and observations are most welcome.

- 📦Accelerating Metronome updated to version 1.5This is v1.5 of Accelerating Metronome. 'Group Loops' is the heart of it.
GROUP LOOPS
Group Loops is a flexible audio scratch pad for recording and layering parts you are working on, like Playlists in Pro Tools, in increments known as Loops.
Press RECORD A LOOP and play or sing a part. Every time the bar comes round you can record another Loop. Each one lasts precisely the bars and time signature you specify, and is auto-saved to your iPhone Files the moment it is complete. Lyrics (or spoken words) are also transcribed as you go so you'll never lose a vocal idea as it flies by.
Keep playing and the Loops keep building, as many as you want, up to 10 total. It records Loops until you press STOP. Any Loop short of its full length is abandoned.
FLEXIBLE TIME SIGNATURE, FLEXIBLE NUMBER OF BARS
The Time Sig buttons are 2 through 9, and the # button at the end lets you select any meter from 2 to 16 beats per measure.
The Bars buttons are 4, 8, 16, 24 and 32, and its # button lets you choose any number from 2 to 40.
Both settings are used during Group Loops recording, and they are separate from the TIME SIGNATURE on the Metronome body. These are more flexible in Group Loops so you can practice in 4 or build a Loop in 7. Or 13. Or 19. Together they enable a max of 3 minutes per Loop.
While a Loop is being recorded, the click follows the Loop's Time Sig. Example: you can setup a Group Loop for THRAK with 5 bars of 7 (and 7 bars of 5) and record both parts in different loops to practice timing, arrangements, voicing, solos. Or even vocals.
Any combination of Bars and Time Sig that goes past three minutes per Loop is dimmed in the drop down lists.
BUILDING a GROUP LOOP
After you've recorded a Loop, you can press RECORD ON TOP and the next one is recorded in sync, with everything already in the Group Loop playing underneath. With each new Loop, you can add new parts, counterpoint, harmony, octaves, or whatever you wish on top. Up to ten Loops play back together per Group Loop.
Tap any Loop to MUTE it, press and hold to SOLO it, slide any of them left to delete. Every Loop can be slid away now, not just the newest.
AUDITION
An Audition button is next to the Input volume slider. Press it and you hear exactly what RECORD A LOOP is about to play when you hit Record: your Tempo, your Time Sig, your Sound Bank, Variations and Beat Map. You can adjust or practice with any of them before you commit to record your first Loop.
SETTING UP
Loop Playback is the last setting box, and you can choose there whether to hear the Metronome click with a Loop while it's playing. Or you can hear only your Loop.
Tap the Tempo box and type a Tempo instead of stepping the BPM with the arrow buttons.
If no Variation is set you can SPIN to let Variations Roulette deliver a surprising texture to record with. You can audition, keep or discard a Variation without leaving Group Loops.
You can Turn ON or Turn OFF Variations and Beat Map at any time while you are recording.
The Count In checkbox gives you a customizable way to know when to begin playing. If you Delete a Loop or a Group Loop, you can Undo it with a button at the end of the page.
THE TUNER now TRANSPOSES for Orchestral Instruments
Chromatic setting opens a new row called "MY INSTRUMENT IS IN" with C, Bb, Eb and F, so Brass and Wind players can tune while honoring their instruments' inherent transposition. It changes the names of the notes and nothing else: the pitch, the needle and the cents stay concert pitch. A trumpet player tuning to Bb now sees Bb.
And, mostly: have fun. I'm experimenting with tools to deepen your engagement AND to enable easier writing, composing, learning, improvising, singing, playing in time and playing with others, with way more than just a box that makes a click.

- 📦Accelerating Metronome updated to version 1.4This is v1.4 of Accelerating Metronome. Here is what is new since v1.3.
0. Everything from 1.0 to 1.3, but better: This build includes many bug fixes, optimizations and polish for the core features including the Accelerator, Dial Usability, consistent daily practice times, Interval Training, Variations, Pedal Tones, Drones and Drum Loops. There are also extended Practice Quotes and Rewards refinements to motivate you to keep going. Every day. I'm listening and paying attention to your feedback and feature ideas. Please keep them coming.
1. New Practice Tools: the Practice Tools drawer now has four unique tools to enable new and engaging ways to fine tune your practice. Beat Map provides ways to develop Song form templates and unique, multi-bar patterns to practice with. And you can 'spin' to let the Universe deliver a compelling template to practice with. Loop Log gives you a way to record musical and lyrical ideas as they fly by during your practice sessions, listening and transcribing lyrics and saving everything you consider valuable to your local files for later use in your DAW. Beat Oscilloscope is a timing tool for working on and visualizing your precision. And Beat Speedometer gives you a way to test and extend your inherent understanding and memory of various BPM. Can you clap 86? Do you inherently know what 192 sounds like? Test your Perfect Tempo with test cases chosen by the Universe. And each tool lets you save your results for tracking progress over time.
2. Five new Sound Banks: ten total in the app. New Banks including SYNTHETIC, MACHINES, JAZZ, 8 BIT and WILDCARD, three sounds each. You can still build your own set from the 30 included sounds.
3. Extended Display Size: NORMAL, LARGE and LARGEST in Settings. The type, the controls, the buttons and the casing all grow together and the app fills the screen edge to edge, for reading the app from where you actually place the phone while practicing. Larger fonts mean less squinting to see my verbose UI.
4. High and Low Pass filters in Settings: with common frequency markers, to shape the tone of Sound Bank metronome sounds. The filters affect the Metronome sounds only, so you can thin the click to hear it over a bass without impacting anything else like Pedal Tones, Drones or Drum Loops.
5. Italian and Spanish: The app is localized thoroughly in Italian, Spanish and English. Also: official listings in the Spanish and Italian iOS App stores.
6. Independent Volume Controls: Pedal Tone has its own volume slider, so you can set its level against the Drum Loops and the click. Also, there is a new Volume slider in Settings so you can set the Click volume independently from Pedal Tones and Drum Loops.
7. FAQ refactoring: the App is now a much smaller download. Every FAQ answer is still on your phone, but the pictures and localization details now load from the web. FAQ search and offline FAQ access still works while the app retains a smaller local footprint.
Thank you for practicing with this, and I look forward to your feedback and feature ideas.

- 📦Accelerating Metronome version 1.3This is 1.3 of Accelerating Metronome. Here is what is new since 1.2.
1. Easier Play Button: Based on feedback, I've added a prominent new Play Button to the center of the Guitar Craft Knot on the Dial. Press the middle of the Dial to begin. Tap Tempo and Type Tempo moved to the BPM window.
2. Drum Loops: the Variations drawer includes Drum Loops that you can practice with: Rockwork, Knotwork, Lockwork, Clockwork and Shockwork. Each family has 3 diverse loops. Drum Loops automatically align with the metronome click. You can also turn on a second Loop by pressing and holding a second button. You can Sequence your selected Loop(s) to change automatically every 4, 8 or more measures. Practicing to a boring click is no longer required.
3. Pedal Tone Enhancements: now you can play 2 drones at once. The Sequencer has 4 new patterns: Whole Ping Pong, Chromatic up and down, Chromatic Shuffle and Tritone.
4. Beat Oscilloscope: lets the App listen through the system mic and measures every note you play against the click. It shows whether each note is on the beat, rushing or dragging, and by how much. Press CAPTURE, you will hear 8 beats of 'calibration count in', and then you play. It will stop by itself after the number of bars you chose. When it stops, it analyzes what happened and offers advice for what to do. You can also save a one page 'Timing Map' as a PDF, or share a Timing Snapshot, and see this week against last week in Practice Tools.
5. Skins + Simple Canvas: AM now has alt 'skins.' Default (dark) and Light, Mono and Greyscale. There is also a refined "Simple Mode" that is available right on the Metronome body: press the 4 corners (top right above the Dial) on the Metronome body and the whole app becomes one flat, scrollable page.
6. Visual Metronome + Offbeat Click: I've added an optional 'soft light' visual METER at the edges of the screen that lets you SEE the pulse even if the sound is turned off.
7. Interval Training: new Ping Pong pattern. In Interval Training, you can turn on 'Ping Pong' mode where the tempo swings around the beginning tempo, moving further three times.
8. Categories revamp: You can (still) make your own Categories to track your practice, but now, each has its own color, and the sort puts YOURS at the top of the list.
9. Enhanced Practice Quotes: there are now expanded Inspirational and Motivational quotes covering practice and craft, each with its own poetic glyph.
10. Full Screen Quotes: an option to see the Quotes show up full screen so you can see them from further away if you're practicing away from your phone.
11. Leaderboard: this is a new way to share and celebrate your work. Of course, it is opt in only, and you can use an alias or a username of your choice. There are 4 boards: this week, this month, this year, all time.
12. Voice Count In: 4 or 8 beats before Accelerator or Interval Training begins. Click, or a counted voice. Beat Oscilloscope has its own count in of eight 'calibration clicks'.
13. Additional Polish: There is a soft METER along the top edge of the screen that gently METERS the sound as it plays, low notes on the left and high on the right.
If you find a bug, use Contact at the bottom of Settings. Describe what you pressed, what you expected, and what happened. And: as usual, a screenshot helps.
THANK YOU, and wishing you fun, productive daily practice.

About Accelerating Metronome
Most metronomes only keep a tempo. This one accelerates gradually while you play, and remembers every minute you practice.
Accelerating Metronome is a practice instrument, made by a working musician in Seattle over forty years of daily practice. This is not what a product committee would have asked for. It is a cross between a Stairmaster and Duolingo. Designed to motivate you to keep going and growing in your practice.
ACCELERATOR
Choose a beginning tempo, a target, and how long you want to practice. It climbs the Ramp in steps, so you invest your time playing rather than reaching for the Dial. When it reaches the target it keeps going at that tempo, and extra time is counted separately as Play Time. Practice and playing are not the same thing. And are not counted as if they were. Save and name your own Custom Ramps.
PEAK SPEED
Mark the tempo where you hit a wall so you have a visual record of your limits. We graph your Peak Speed(s) so you can see your progress.
SPIN THE METRONOME
Press this and let the Universe choose a tempo for you. Practicing only at the tempos you like is how blind spots appear. And this is the cure. Spin the Metronome before a Group Rehearsal to bring everyone into listening and warming up together beginning with a cue from the Muse.
PRACTICE HISTORY: YOUR PRACTICE, VISUALIZED OVER TIME
Every session is documented: when, how long, which tempos, and what you were working on. Name your own Categories and each one has its own color. The Calendar shows a month at a glance, with Celebrations and Gold after you have completed a full hour of practice.
STREAKS + CELEBRATIONS
A Streak counts the days in a row you practiced. Momentum may motivate you to pick up the instrument on an evening you had decided not to. And practice more than an hour every day from Sunday to Saturday and the whole week is celebrated in Gold.
A ROCK SOLID METRONOME
Tempo is set from a rotary dial you drag with your thumb, the way a hardware tempo wheel works. Three default voices with ten alt Sound Banks deliver a wide variety of sounds. Select a Time Signature, and the downbeat gets its own sound. An integrated Tuner and Tuning references from 432 to 445.
TAP TEMPO + TYPE TEMPO
Tap the BPM Window, and the tempo changes to what you tap. Press and hold to type in a tempo.
MIXING
The click plays over (or under) your other app's sound, music, podcasts, or a backing track without interruption. The Metronome keeps going when you switch apps or the screen locks. Beats align with the audio hardware's clock rather than a timer, so nothing drifts while you are not looking. Optional Haptics let you feel the Beat, the screen stays awake while it plays, and a Loudness Booster doubles the click volume.
UNIQUE PRACTICE TOOLS
Beat Map is a grid where you choose 1, 2 or 3 sounds per beat, and save your Maps by name. Group Loops captures and layers what you play, cut at the bar lines, as WAVs. Beat Oscilloscope lets you see where you play relative to the click. B
