About Fire Watch : Fire & Smoke
Fire Watch shows wildfires detected by NASA satellites across Europe, North America and Australia on a map, and simulates smoke plume movement from wind forecasts.
ONE SIMPLE QUESTION: IS THE SMOKE HEADING MY WAY?
Tap any fire: Fire Watch simulates its plume hour by hour and tells you whether your location is in its path, and when the smoke could arrive. The simulation starts at the fire's first detection rather than the moment you tap it, so smoke already on its way is visible and the slider spans both past and forecast.
LIVE TRACKING
When a plume concerns you, a countdown settles onto your Lock Screen with the expected smoke wave and the arrival marker. The scale adapts to the wait, from one to eight hours. Tracking also appears in the Dynamic Island, on Apple Watch with a dedicated layout, and full screen when iPhone rests on its charger in StandBy. For longer waits, a reminder warns you an hour ahead. Everything is computed on your device.
FRESH SATELLITE DATA
• 4 satellite platforms (VIIRS Suomi-NPP, NOAA-20, NOAA-21 and MODIS Terra/Aqua), about 8 observations per day
• Continuous age scale, from bright yellow to dark brown across seven days
• Fire intensity in megawatts
• Permanent heat sources recognized and set aside: industrial sites, gas flares, solar panel glint
• The age of the most recent detection and the time of the last refresh are always visible
BURNED LAND
• Areas mapped by Copernicus EFFIS across Europe
• Official WFIGS perimeters in the US and CWFIS perimeters in Canada
• An estimated footprint everywhere else, computed on device
• Officially declared US incidents with name, size and containment
AIR QUALITY
A colored veil marks areas where air quality is degrading, using the European index, with the value at your location.
A SERIOUS PLUME SIMULATION
• Puff model: each puff is carried by the wind forecast at its own position and flight time, so the plume turns and bends as the weather evolves
• Choice of wind model: automatic, AROME France high resolution, ECMWF or GFS
• Hour-by-hour animation, adjustable parameters
BUILT FOR THE ESSENTIALS
• No account, no sign-up, no ads
• Your location never leaves your device
• Data stays on screen even when a refresh fails
• Automatic fire clustering by zoom level
IMPORTANT
Fire Watch provides estimates computed from satellite data and weather forecasts. This information can be incomplete or delayed (1 to 3 h satellite latency) and never replaces alerts and instructions from local authorities. In an emergency, always follow official guidance.
Data sources: NASA FIRMS, Open-Meteo, Copernicus EFFIS, NIFC and WFIGS (US), CWFIS (Canada), NSW RFS and VicEmergency (Australia).

Latest updates
2.3
Fire Watch now supports iPhone Duo.
• Outer display: map controls move to the system side bar.
• Inner display, fully open: the map fills the screen with the smoke plume controls floating at the bottom.
• Partially folded: the map on one side of the fold, the plume and fire details on the other.
On other iPhone models, map buttons now use the system toolbar style.
