About Maria Magdalena
About the exhibition
For centuries, she has been revered, co-opted, and misunderstood like no other biblical figure: Mary Magdalene. For the first time in the German-speaking world, the Städel Museum and the Liebieghaus Skulpturensammlung will now shed light on the multilayered interpretations of this fascinating woman – from Christ’s companion to penitent to self-determined protagonist and object of emulation. More than 100 superb works by such artists as Albrecht Dürer, El Greco, Georges de La Tour, Max Beckmann, Marlene Dumas, Nieves González, and Kiki Smith illustrate how the image of Mary Magdalene has evolved over the centuries and continues to raise questions about femininity, spirituality, and societal roles to this day.
Audioguide
Who was Mary Magdalene? The Bible gives us only a few details about her – though she was certainly one of the most important figures at Jesus’ side. The app guides you through the mysteries surrounding this fascinating woman, who has inspired countless artists to this day. With audio tracks and illustrations at more than 25 stops along the way. Duration: approx. 60 min.
