About Napkin – Notes & Calc
Napkin is a notes app that calculates, on iPhone, iPad and Mac.
Write a line, end it with =>, and the result appears behind the arrow. Change a number above it and every result below updates as you type.
CALCULATE IN YOUR NOTES
• Variables, including names with spaces: rent = 1100, per day = left / 30 =>
• Your own functions: f(x) = x^2 + 1, then f(4) =>
• Units and conversions: 26.2 miles in km =>, 50 km/h * 30 min =>
• Unknown names stay symbolic: 2 * y + 3 * 4 => 2y + 12
EQUATIONS
• 6x = 30, then x => 5 – the unknown is solved and defined
• Units too: speed * 2 h = 100 km => speed = 50 km/h
• Systems: x + y = 10 and x - y = 2 give x = 6, y = 4
• Comments after # stay out of the calculation
PLOTS
• plot(sin, cos, -pi, pi) draws the curves right under the line
• Functions you defined, expressions in x, or a list of numbers
SONGS AND THE STAGE VIEW
• Chords in brackets, as in ChordPro: Smoke goes [G]up and the [C]stars come out
• The stage view shows a song full screen, chords above their syllables, scrolling up at the speed you set
• The text fills the screen's width; the screen stays on
TAGS
• Label notes, for example Song, then search #song to list them
• Notes with chords count as songs without a tag
• Tags stay with the file: they show in the Files app and the Mac's Finder
MARKDOWN, STYLED AS YOU WRITE
• Headings, bold, italic, code and quotes are styled in the editor
• Bold, italic and links from the menu over a selection, or ⌘B, ⌘I, ⌘K on a keyboard
• Tables, and Convert to Table for lines in columns
• [[Links]] between notes, and tappable web addresses
FAST NOTES
• One field to search and to create: type, press Return, and you are writing
• The words you searched for are marked in the note; find in a note with the find bar
• Hide notes you rarely need; a search still finds them
YOUR FILES, ON ALL YOUR DEVICES
• Every note is a plain Markdown file in a folder you choose, for example in iCloud Drive
• In iCloud with one tap: Napkin on your iPhone, iPad and Mac finds the same notes by itself
• A note changed on two devices at once is kept twice, never overwritten
• Buy once: Napkin for Mac, iPhone and iPad is one purchase
Napkin collects no data and makes no connections of its own.
