Physical background:

After sunset, the earth loses heat toward the sky – especially strongly when there are no clouds. As a result, the near-ground air also cools. The cooling stops as soon as the air becomes cold enough for the contained water vapour to condense into dew or fog. This releases heat, which slows down the cooling and can prevent ground frost.

How much the temperature drops at night therefore depends on the so-called dew point. If the dew point is at 0 °C or below in the evening, ground frost is to be expected during the following night. The lower the dew point, the higher the risk. The more parameters are taken into account, the more accurate the forecast.

NightFrost applies the proven, scientifically based Magnus dew point formula automatically, hour by hour, to the weather forecast for the next three nights – not just to a single snapshot. Additional parameters allow it to achieve a particularly high accuracy of well over 95%.
