What's going on in Norway today, in English, and what it means for you.

NEWS
Norwegian news in English from The Local Norway, News in English, the Norwegian government, Norwegian SciTech News, Life in Norway and publishers across the web, by topic: politics, the economy, business, energy and climate, living in Norway, immigration and expat rules, housing, travel and transport, health, science, defence, the Arctic, the royal family and sport. When several outlets carry the same story, it shows once. Follow your city, from Oslo and Bergen to Tromsø and Longyearbyen, and the topics you care about, with a notification at most once a day for each, and never at night in Norway.

TODAY
Will you see the northern lights tonight? The app checks the aurora forecast against what your city needs, tonight's cloud and the dark hours, and can alert you on a good night. What electricity costs in your price area this hour, today's prices hour by hour and the cheapest three hours to run the washing machine. How much daylight there is, and when the polar night or the midnight sun begins. Whether the shops are open (Easter closes them four days out of five), until when they sell beer, and Vinmonopolet's hours. Rain in the next 90 minutes and official weather warnings from MET Norway, a strike watch, and the krone against your home currency.

THE CALENDAR
Public holidays, school holidays as they usually fall, Constitution Day, Easter and Christmas customs, the clock changes, and the money and paperwork dates newcomers miss: the tax return deadline, holiday pay and tax-free June, half tax in December, your new tax card, the kindergarten application deadline, and when studded tyres are allowed in your county. Get a reminder the evening before the ones you choose.

NORWAY EXPLAINED
NAV, fødselsnummer, BankID, Storting, allemannsretten, Vinmonopolet, dugnad: when a headline uses a Norwegian term, tap it for a plain-English explanation. Or browse over 130 of them, from tax and paperwork to health care, work and the outdoors. Works offline.

A NORWEGIAN WORD A DAY
A word or phrase each day, with an example sentence and what it really means, from koselig to "Ut på tur, aldri sur". Get it each morning if you like.
