About Saudade: Photo Memories
This is Saudade.
It unfolds your album into a single day: open it at any time and see the photos you took at that exact minute, on that date, in years past.
You have used the "On This Day" feature in Photos, but it only tells you what you did on this day last year. Saudade tells you what you were doing at this moment.
A STACK OF PRINTS
Several shots from the same minute stack into a small pile of Polaroids, up to five. Swipe to flip through them; photos of different shapes peek out at the edges. Each print keeps a slight tilt of its own, the pile steps toward the lower right, and the prints behind sit a shade darker — you can see the thickness of the stack. Pinch to enlarge a print, turn it with two fingers, release to snap back. Beside the pile, a seven-segment clock glows in the color of the current photo.
THE HALF PRINT ABOVE
If you took a photo at a later hour on this date in a previous year, half a print hangs from the top of the screen, slightly out of focus, like a preview. When the minute arrives it slides down and becomes the first card.
A SINGLE PRINT
Tap any print in the list and it flies out from where it sits, filling the screen. The status bar steps aside, leaving only the paper and the clock beside it. Pull down, or tap the empty space, and it flies back into its slot while the neighbouring prints slide in from both sides.
Below the single print sits a "Share this one" button. It composes an image on your phone: the photo, its white border, the date and place along the bottom edge, the clock beside it, and a small Saudade mark in the corner. Then it hands that image to the system share sheet — who receives it is entirely up to you. The image is composed on-device; nothing is uploaded and no third-party service is involved.
A WIDGET ON YOUR HOME SCREEN
Long-press the Home Screen and add Saudade. The medium widget shows one print on the left and, on the right, a seven-segment clock with the minute the photo was actually taken and its city — a real timestamp, not a round one. The photo keeps its own shape, never cropped; through the day the widget swaps in different prints on its own, every ten-odd minutes at intervals that never quite repeat. The snapshot is generated on your device by the app; the widget only displays it, and never touches the network.
LIGHT THAT FOLLOWS THE DAY
The background tracks the hour: nearly black at night, blue at dawn, warm at sunrise, brightest at noon, orange at dusk, violet after dark.
A QUIET GOLD
If a photo was taken on this day of the year — any year — then when it slides into the "now" position, a faint golden light breathes along the edges of its print. There is no setting to flip; either you meet it, or you don't.
ONLY REAL, CAMERA-TAKEN PHOTOS
Screenshots, cached chat images, memes, AI-generated images, panoramas and long screenshots are filtered out. Photos with no capture time are left out too — on a clock of the day they would only be wrong. Bursts from the same place
