Votes for Women

Votes for Women invites the player to join the U.S. women’s suffrage movement, organize support, and campaign for victory across the 48 states that were called to ratify the Nineteenth Amendment in 1919-1920. The player navigates the era’s historic events, movement schisms, and political challenges to win. And winning is not easy. The Suffragist player must have Congress pass the proposed amendment and then have three-fourths of the states (36 of the then 48 states) ratify the Amendment. The computer opponent plays the Anti-Suffragists and wins by either preventing Congress from passing the proposed amendment or by having 13 states reject the Amendment. In actual history, it came down to one vote, just one single vote, by one legislator in Tennessee. The game features over 100 event cards with period art, portraiture, and historic documents that can be played to campaign or organize the suffragist side of the issue. But it won’t be easy.
