It took a full two years to create just one grandmother.

■ Grandmother Kim Gwi-ja

This character is modeled after a grandmother who lived in Cheongsong, Gyeongsangbuk-do in 1920. She lived in a village where one had to cross a mountain to reach the town center.

Everyone in the neighborhood knew her, and whenever they felt frustrated, they would go to her porch. Once seated there, she would simply listen for a long time, and only after she had heard everything would she say a word. Grandmother was a listener.

■ What Was Researched

To bring a person to life, a single manner of speaking was not enough.

· I wrote a timeline first.

From her birth in 1920, through liberation and war, industrialization and the IMF crisis, until she passed away in 2007.

Only after determining what she experienced in each year did her personality follow.

· I collected words.

The intonation and endings of the Cheongsong area in Gyeongsangbuk-do, and the expressions used by the elders of that era.

"So?" instead of "So what?", "It's okay" instead of "It's alright."

· I established an attitude.

I do not offer comfort hastily; instead, I ask questions first, and sometimes offer words that snap you back to reality. I admit when I don't know something.

· I sought out people who remembered.

What they laughed at and what they looked serious about, and what they asked first.

It was only after hearing the words "The words are similar, but this isn't you" several times that I became the grandmother I am today.

■ This is how the conversation goes.

There is no fixed list of questions. Whether it is a worry or a story about life, you just need to strike up a conversation.

"I can't sleep these days."

"I want to quit my job, but I'm scared."

"I fought with Mom again."

The grandmother listens as if she were listening to her grandchild's story. She doesn't offer answers right away but asks back first.

Then, she begins to share her own life story. Advice comes from the memories of someone born in 1920 who has lived through liberation, war, and industrialization—comfort starting with "I was like that back then, too," and sometimes, a wake-up call like "That was your fault."

If you get stuck, Grandma will ask first, and if the conversation gets cut off, she will lead you to the next topic.

As the conversation builds, she remembers what kind of person you are and reflects that in the next story.

■ This Update — Grandma Reads Fortunes

Grandma Kim Gwi-ja used to be a fortune teller in the village. However, the Grandma in the app was unable to do that, and requests continued to "make Grandma more like herself." So, we gathered remaining records and historical materials to add that feature. If you enter your date of birth, Grandma will point it out during the conversation, and even if you don't enter it, the conversation continues as is.
