About Aruite Tabicho: Step Journey
A pedometer that turns your daily steps into a journey along Japan's old highways. Using the steps and walking distance recorded in Apple Health, you travel from Nihonbashi in Edo to Sanjo Ohashi in Kyoto, stopping at the 53 post towns of the Tokaido. At each post town, a scenic illustration and a short description open, and a dated stamp is added to your journal.
- Progress even on days you don't open the app: steps and distance are read from Apple Health from the day you set out. There is no start button.
- Steps counted on both iPhone and Apple Watch are not double counted.
- Get a notification when you reach a post town while the app is closed.
- Every illustration was drawn for this app. Descriptions were written after checking facts on public pages of national and local governments, and you can reread any town you have reached.
- See how far it is to the next town in km and steps, how much of the route you have covered, and an estimate of the days left at your pace. Home Screen and Lock Screen widgets are included.
- When you finish, look back on how many days and kilometers it took, then walk back or start again. Extra distance carries over to the next journey.
Distances between post towns follow the Edo shogunate's records (Tokaido Shukuson Taigaicho): 126 ri 6 cho 1 ken in total, about 495.5 km. Sources are listed in the app.
Your data stays on your iPhone. Apple Health is read only (steps and walking + running distance); nothing is written. Journey records are not sent to a server or iCloud. No account, no ads, no analytics.
Aruite Tabicho Plus
With Plus, you can walk the Nakasendo (69 stations, about 534 km) through the Usui Pass and the Kiso valley. Family Sharing is supported. The Tokaido journey (both directions, any number of times), illustrations, stamps, journal, widgets and notifications work fully without Plus.
The app is in Japanese.
