- 📦BookScanner Book Leveler App updated to version 6.6New ways to find a book when its barcode won't scan.
- Type Title — A new Home screen tile looks a book up by its title, with the author if you know it. It is on iPhone, iPad and Mac.
- Scan Cover — A new Home screen tile opens the camera on the book itself. Pick Cover, Spine or ISBN for what you're pointing at, then tap Capture. If BookScanner reads a valid ISBN, it looks the book up; otherwise it opens Type Title with the title and author it read filled in, and nothing is looked up until you check them and search. Scan Cover appears on iPhone and iPad models whose camera can read text, and not on Mac.
- The ISBN printed on the book — Some book-fair and book-club editions carry a store barcode that isn't the book's ISBN, with the ISBN printed in digits above it. Choose ISBN in Scan Cover and hold the printed digits inside the frame, and the book is looked up as if you had scanned its barcode.
- Store barcodes — A store barcode, or another barcode that isn't a book's ISBN, now gets its own message saying so, with Type the title offered beside it, and Scan the cover where the camera can be used.
- When a book isn't found — Book Not Found offers Type the title, and Scan the cover where the camera can be used. Connection Problem offers Try again.
- A barcode remembered — When a barcode isn't found and you then find the book by its title, BookScanner keeps that barcode with the book, and scanning it again opens the book from your History. The book's detail screen lists it as Scanned barcode, with a button to remove it.
- Smarter Title Reading — On supported iPhones and iPads, Settings carries a Smarter Title Reading switch under Scanning. It helps pick out the title and author when you capture a cover, runs entirely on the device, and can be turned off. If your device has no such switch, there is nothing to turn on.

Ratings counts are read daily. A jump usually means a launch, a feature, ads or a new review prompt.

About BookScanner Book Leveler App
BookScanner has been rebuilt. Everything you scanned is still here. On first launch BookScanner brings your earlier scan history across by itself — nothing to export, nothing to restore, nothing to tap. The old library file is read and left exactly where it is, so the version you already had is untouched. Books that came over are marked "From your earlier scan history" in History, and the filter sheet will show you just those. You can run the import again from Settings whenever you like.
Your ATOS levels, AR quiz numbers, AR points, word counts, interest levels and Lexile measures come across exactly as BookScanner had them.
NOTHING TO BUY
Lexile measures, DRA, Fountas & Pinnell / Guided Reading Levels and grade equivalents are included for every owner. BookScanner has no in-app purchases and no subscriptions.
FIVE READING LEVELS, AND WHERE EACH ONE CAME FROM
- AR (Accelerated Reader) / ATOS — looked up, never estimated
- Lexile measures — looked up, never estimated
- Guided Reading Level (GRL) / F&P — looked up from Scholastic when Scholastic has it; otherwise BookScanner estimates it and marks it ≈
- DRA (Developmental Reading Assessment) — marked ≈ when BookScanner estimates it
- Grade level equivalent — marked ≈ when BookScanner estimates it
Above P, BookScanner doesn't estimate a Guided Reading Level: where Scholastic has no level for a longer chapter book, BookScanner shows none rather than a letter it can't stand behind.
NO BARCODE? FIND IT ANOTHER WAY
When a barcode won't scan, or it isn't the book's ISBN, type the book's title instead. On iPhone and iPad models whose camera can read text, BookScanner can also read the title from the cover or spine for you to check before it searches, or read the ISBN printed on the book.
NOW ON MAC
BookScanner runs on the Mac as well as on iPhone and iPad, on the same purchase. Scan with the webcam at your desk. Your history is kept in your own private iCloud database and syncs to your other devices.
