About Shake Box: Number Bonds
Shake Box makes number bonds visible: shake the counters and watch them land on two sides. Cover one side, let children guess how many are hidden, then lift the cover to check. This builds strong mental images that connect with numbers and number sentences – until children can work with the numbers alone.
• Guess first, then reveal: a number pad right on the cover; numbers larger than the whole can be locked
• Arranged like a real shake box: five in a row, then the next row on top; also ten frame, dice patterns, power of five, stacked pairs or free
• Part-whole model and fact family: addition and subtraction for every split, with the whole and the parts in colour
• Number bonds: collect and order the splits you find – one house for each whole
• Practice: number bonds (how many counters are hidden?) and subitising, with an optional quick look; questions can be read aloud; progress saved per name or initials, on this device only
• Adjustable number range; shake evenly or like real counters
• Share via link or QR code; English and German
• No ads, no data collection, works offline
Developed in close collaboration with Hans-Joachim Lukow and Angelika Albert of the Osnabrück Centre for Mathematical Learning, for use alongside the German Schüttelbox programme.
For early years, Year 1 and maths intervention – at school and at home.
